Having partially recovered from attempting to eat that sour cream based liquid on cereal, I again ventured out into the world in search of lunch. I found what I'm told is the oldest hot-dog stand in Göteborg, and lined up. The lady working the stand didn't actually speak enlgish, so I ordered what the person before me had (much pointing was involved) and a Pucko.

Aparently hot dogs here come laden with a generous helping of mashed potatos... With ketchup on top. The lady offered to top it off with some sliced pickles (topping the potatoes, not the hot dog) I declined.

It looked something like this:

I think it would actually be a neat project for someone who travels a lot to take a picture of their meal every day or something, then at the end of the year post the locations of their travels, and a new picture of a meal every day, people could examine the picture and try to guess where that meal was obtained.

Well, I'm in Sweden at the moment, visiting some friends from the summer camp I attended this summer. My host is at school for the day and I wanted to grab some milk and orange juice for breakfast, off to the grocery store I went. I'd been drinking milk here for a couple days, I remembered what the container looked like, no big deal.

I bought this:

It covered my cereal like this (notice it's thick and creamy):

Which isn't quite what I was going, for, it appears to be some sort of sour cream type liquid, which aparently they do eat with their cereal with on occasion, I just wasn't prepared for it, but I'm afraid to back to the grocery store, who knows what I might come back with.

Edit

Charlotta got home, and she describes the product I bougt as being somewhere in the middle of sour cream, milk & yogurt, you can read more about it here: Filmjölk

I think I'm kind of late in the game here, I've signed up for myspace, Facebook, Linkedin& Plaxo in the past few weeks. Facebook and MySpace seem to be doing basically the same thing, you sign up, you make friends, you keep in touch, Facebook has a user interface that doesn't make me cry, and seems more centered on keeping in touch with existing friends while MySpace seems to really really want me to spend more time crying, and having absolutely no clue how to do anything from anywhere, while showing me lots of ads.

That leaves Linkedin and Plaxo, two services that do somewhat different things. Linkedin was designed to help you network by first linking up with all your existing friends & colleagues, then using them to meet other people through introductions, with a constant emphasis on expanding your network (I honestly don't know if it's possible to satisfy the LinkedIn beast, so far my guess would be no). Plaxo on the other hand was designed to help you keep your contact information up to date when your friends move, change jobs etc. by syncing your address book with the information your friends have provided, and syncing across computers/programs. At ZendCon Terry Chay was very very clear in describing that Plaxo didn't want to be Linkedin, they don't want to help you make more friends, they just want to keep you in touch with the ones you have. I'm okay with that, I just don't want to have to keep six separate websites up to date as to exactly who my friends are.

What would be absolutely perfect would be if I could use Linkedin to find my friends, and Plaxo to keep my address book up to date. I like Plaxo's permissions system (I own my data, not the website) so I think I'm a little happier giving them all my data.

What would be absolutely perfect is some sort of world where Linkedin bought Plaxo or vice versa, allowing me to find and link my friends together, then keep my address books up to date.

I mentioned a while back that I was looking for a cell phone, i settled on a Treo 650 and picked one up off eBay from urbancomm2, I used the phone for a several days, then one day the phone died. I thought I might be screwed, I've got several well placed contacts at eBay and PayPal (writing a book with those two words in the title has it's advantages) but it still seemed destined for a huge pain in the neck. I was wrong, the seller accepted the phone for an exchange and mailed me a new one once mine was received and confirmed dead.

This experience has done wonders for my faith in the eBay community.

I've ben tracking the Amazon Sales Rank of my book and a few others for a while, the graphing code just got a big boost, here's the newest version (if I'm doing this right, this image will be updated every few minutes).

Well, I was sick with food poisioning, so I missed the entire conference, but here's someone else's wrap up. I'm in it a lot for someone who spent the entire time either in bed or enjoying the plumbing fixtures.

I've finally taken the time to take two screenshots see them below, notice the difference in where the point is placed, and how the (yellow) roads are named differently:

API:

Google Maps Site:

The information in the second image is right on all counts. I wonder why Google chose to use an alternate, inferior data source for the API? Does anyone have any experience with the US data, is it more comparable there?

I’m working on a small site for Home For the Holidays BB, which is running a christmas tour this year. Since it's a self guided tour I want to include maps, the Google Maps API seems like the obvious choice.

Something weird I'm noticing is the difference in the data provider. When you use regular Google maps the data is provided by Navteq (who provides data for pretty much everyone, including Google Earth) while when you're using the API you get data from TeleAtlas. Now I've been lead down strange routes as often as anyone by Navteq's data, but it's better than the TeleAtlas stuff in my opinion, it places houses more accurately and names streets in better compliance with local sign-age (King Street or Regional Highway 15?).

Once I figure out how to take a screenshot on a mac I'll post a comparison.

I'm of the opinion that people without CVS karma should be neither seen nor heard on the PHP Internals list, there's simply too many twits out there posting to the list and basically just wasting time, plus it's an open source project if you've got an opinion pick up an editor and write the patch.

That being said, I really want this: [PHP-DEV] [PATCH] Scalar type hinting ;-)

Yes, I am aware that PHP is a loosely typed language, I would just appreciate the ability to easily enforce some typing when my functions accept data. I don't need any casting to occur, if I’m passing data around I can cast it ahead of time (likely after proper validation), I'll take it very strict (===), I don't need any extra sugar like type-sensitive ini settings, just stick it in there.
